HTC Inspire 4G: a Great iPhone Alternative - Thinking Clearly

HTC Inspire 4G HTC Inspire 4G

Everyone you know might be jumping on the Apple bandwagon but the HTC Inspire 4G Android phone could really change your mind and make you leave your iPhone behind.

Being an iPhone user, it’s really hard to tear your eyes away from its very sharp screen and the bunch of fun and useful apps you’ve downloaded. But I’m sure that like me, you’re also frustrated by that one missing feature – flash support.

YouTube is a major source of entertainment and how-to’s on the web for me, and not being able to access that on my phone is such an annoying thing. I could wait until I have access on my laptop or desktop to do this but that’ll defeat the purpose of getting a smartphone and paying such a high price. So I tried looking for an alternative.

Finding a worthy iPhone substitute is actually quite hard. You may get flash support but other features are lacking and it may look primitive compared to the iPhone’s sleek lines and polished body. Good thing I kept on researching for more phones, as I came across the HTC Inspire 4G during one of my internet searches.

HTC Inspire 4G is an Android phone and it runs on the Froyo OS. I really like its build and how solid it feels. Of course, it supports flash so I can watch YouTube on the go. But aside from that crucial feature, I felt that this is actually a better deal than my iPhone. HTC Desire 4G has an 8MP camera, HD video, and Dolby surround sound – all that for a much lower price than the iPhone 4G. And yes, for the image-conscious, I caught people glancing while using this phone, as it looks really hi-tech and stylish at the same time.

Myxer's BoomBox mCommerce Report Reveals Key Findings in Consumer Purchasing ... - Marketwire (press release)

SOURCE: Myxer

Survey of 2,400 Mobile Visitors to m.myxer.com Shows That 53 Percent Made Purchases From Their Mobile Phone With 19 Percent Saying They Made Between 2 and 5 Purchases a Month

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - Jul 11, 2011) - Myxer, a mobile technology company that operates the largest ad-supported mobile entertainment site in the U.S., today released the Myxer Q2 BoomBox Report on mCommerce revealing key findings in consumer's purchasing behavior among mobile shoppers. The report reinforces consumer's increasing reliance on smartphones for communications, entertainment, information and increasingly, shopping.

Based on a survey of 2,400 mobile visitors to m.myxer.com, 53 percent responded that they had made a purchase from their mobile phone. The largest group, 19 percent, said they made between 2 and 5 purchases a month. Surprisingly, 16 percent said that they make more than 10 purchases a month. Other key findings include the following:

Mobile Payments

Taking a closer look at the 53 percent who said they did indeed make purchases from their phone, 31 percent said they preferred to have their mobile purchases charged to their mobile phone bill while 18 percent said they preferred to pay by credit card. Broken down by age, younger mobile consumers clearly preferred paying on their phone bill. In the 18-24 year old age range, 38 percent preferred charging their phone bill, while only 14 percent preferred paying by credit card. In the 35-54 age range, the credit card was the preferred method of payment at 28 percent versus 23 percent for paying by phone bill. It is also interesting to note that within Android users who purchased, 27 percent preferred to use their credit card.

Music leads the charge for purchased mobile content

The report also revealed that music stood out as the clear leader of products being bought, representing 68 percent of mobile purchases. 5 percent of respondents who bought from their phones said they purchased physical items to be delivered, and another 5 percent said they purchased other digital content. With music the dominant item purchased, it was not surprising to see that the largest group, 37 percent, spent less than $5 on their individual mobile purchases. The second largest group, 26 percent, opened their mobile wallets to spend more than $20 per mobile purchase.

Shopper Confidence

Respondents also said they were happy to shop from a variety of merchants with 40 percent purchasing from 2-4 vendors in the past month. 24 percent purchased from 5 or more vendors and 12 percent purchased from 10 or more vendors.

mCommerce Drivers

Convenience was the top response with 37 percent of the purchasers. Price was second with 24 percent of the mobile shoppers. A close third at 22 percent was those who shopped from their mobile because of the "cool factor." When looking at just Android users, "convenience" was the top reason for mobile shopping, with 45 percent of Android users citing it.

"With a large and active mobile audience, Myxer has the opportunity to conduct mobile surveys to help us capture the pulse of mobile consumer behavior," said Andrew Coury, data analyst, Myxer. "The BoomBox mCommerce report shows that direct mobile purchases should continue to be an exciting area of industry wide growth."

G5 Entertainment releases 5 games onto the Android Market all at once. - DroidGamers

b_500_274_16777215_0___images_stories_news_G5Ent_G5-Entertainment-android-games.jpg

Last week we reported on G5 Entertainment and that they would start bringing their games over to the Android platform with an initial 5 game release starting... well... today. Instead of just releasing one today and letting the rest slowly flow onto the market, they decided to release all five at once.

Three titles are time management type of games while the other two are puzzle games. All five are currently available on the Android Market. Ironically, in the description of each game they are saying that it is an introductory price right now at 30% off even though the game is free. We are going to guess though that they mean 30% off of in-game purchases. Here is a quick rundown of all five games and their links to the Android Market:

Supermarket Mania is a highly addictive casual time management game with millions of players on iOS, PC and other platforms. Running a grocery store can be a lot of fun! Help Nikki keep five stores stocked to the rafters with the provisions customers want, and show your adversary what a little hometown pluck can do!

Stand O'Food is an original, fast-paced restaurant challenge. Feed a host of hungry patrons before they leave in a huff! Slap together burgers and cook up some bacon as quickly as you can!

Mahjong Artifacts: Chapter 2 takes tile-matching games in an exciting new direction! Pair up tiles to dismantle hundreds of layouts. Gather pearls for purchasing special powers, utilize a selection of ground-breaking powerups, earn trophies, and enjoy the game's beautiful graphics and rich audio.

Mahjong Artifacts - Escape from the rush of modern life into immersive ancient atmosphere of Mahjong Artifacts! Three game play modes will take you through five exotic cultures as you enjoy music tracks inspired by ancient melodies.

Success Story - Slap together burgers for hungry customers, serve French fries and desserts, and keep the line moving in this arcade time management game!

All games are available right now for download off the Android Market for free. If you like these types of games, then they are worth checking out. Supermarket Mania seems like a good time killer as do the other two time management games. They have a lot of games so don't be surprised when more arrive! You can check out a trailer for all five games and gameplay footage as well over on our YouTube Channel or in our previous article.

Mobile Gaming Will Never Defeat Console Gaming - Gaming Union

Subscribe to our RSS feed! PS3X360WiiOther Mon, Jul 11th, 2011, 5:14pm EDT by Adam Ma Mobile Gaming Will Never Defeat Console Gaming

There's nothing better than opening up a newspaper these days to find some tech-analyst or financial adviser spouting out information regarding industry trends, as if playing Angry Birds once or twice provides them with enough insight to tell where all of these developers are going. It's astonishing in a way, because they always jump from one massive trend to another without any regard to how our beloved pastime seems to work. A few short years ago it was all about how Halo and Call of Duty were the only profitable games ever, and that investing in any kind of startup company outside of a AAA studio was a waste of time. Today it's all about mobile gaming, and how its selling power will leave anything that isn't on an iPhone, Android, or tablet smoldering in its wake.

It's funny because this sort of 'analysis' doesn't really happen in any other industry where years of trending, economics, and global resource trade are called upon to make an informed decision. But the gaming industry is new, fresh, and very similar to the movie industry so why not judge it based off some bare bones statistics? Just citing sales should be enough to showcase where gaming will go in the future, right? If only it were so easy, then perhaps Japanese game developers wouldn't be having such a hard time with consumers today.

The fact of the matter is, gaming trends are not easy to predict. When a developer chooses to absolutely saturate the market with a particular type of title, it's fair enough to call them out on it (in addition to watching the franchise die off), but to assert that one type of gaming will die simply due to projected sales is ridiculous. A nice case in point is how many analysts like to point out that more people own cell phones than consoles themselves, and how the ownership of cellular devices will come close to doubling itself over the next year (according to sales-analysis predictions).

It's impossible to predict who amongst these millions of people will find a game like Angry Birds or Plants vs Zombies attractive, in the same regard that it's impossible to assume that any one type of phone design will reign supreme over the next year. New plans may be drawn up, new models released on the market, but no one will assume that because something is released brand new from a familiar phone designer that it will be an instant smash hit. The same can be said regarding gaming, there's no way to know if these one-hit wonder developers will be able to replicate their success with anything aside from Angry Birds 2, especially amidst an environment heavily saturated with so many other games attempting to achieve the same kind of success, but ultimately fall short of glory. Even console gaming doesn't hold that kind of a guarantee, as is apparent from when Medal of Honor lost it's core player-base to the Call of Duty franchise several years back.

It's fair enough to say that most cellular owners will be investing in apps, and that many of those apps will become powerful revenue generators for a few lucky development groups out there. It's currently estimated that 552 millon smartphones have been sold worldwide with a prediction that 815 will be sold by the end of 2011, as opposed to consoles which boasts 183 million units sold since Dec 31st 2010 and a predicted 227 million by the end 2011. It's  important to consider that while Parks Assoicates (the provider of these figures) reports a slow decline in home console sales, these three systems currently investigated are the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3, all three of which are systems that have been around close to seven years now. There are quite frankly more compelling reasons to obtain a new cell phone once a year than there are to go out and buy another Xbox. Most service providers will even offer incentive to switch, which is a definite plus.

Understandable as it is to thin that with cell phones becoming so prevalent in todays society that app-based gaming will become more popular, but to speculate if mobile gaming will edge out consoles just shows a lack of understanding when it comes to the history of the industry. Cell phone games will never be able to replicate the kind of experience you can find in a console, the same way that movie theatres will always be relevant because they still have something to provide socially. It's nice to know that apps have a place in the world of gaming, especially for those who consider themselves to be 'casual gamers', but one new popular medium simply does not cancel out another.

Maybe it's because many of the best selling titles in gaming happen to be sequels that these analysts are coming across the industry incorrectly. When you watch a game like Black Ops become one of the greatest selling pieces of entertainment ever, it's hard not to look at something like Demon's Souls and consider it a failure. But keeping in mind that the target audience for these titles are radically different, you can begin to see how the definition of success and profit can be two very different things. Both casual gamers and journalists alike make the error of pitting any MMO's value against a title like World of Warcraft, a mistake that can often times be a marketing nightmare for some unfortunate developer. As cell phone games are really just another branch of the industry, isn't it safe to assume that they have a completely different target audience? Contrary to the advertisements I've seen, there's never been a point in my life where I've gone home and disregarded the Playstation or Xbox to sit on my couch and rock out on my cell phone. Hard to say I know anyone else who does that either, but maybe I'm just friends with the wrong people.

The only thing that will ever surpass the current generation of consoles is the next, and that's just the way it's always been. Technology has improved to the point where we can finally start experimenting with deeper levels of gameplay, various styles and sorts of gaming immersions, and naturally new mediums to experience it all on. It would be nice if some of the hype concerning apps would die down a bit though; it's an exciting new sector to watch grow but I think people are savvy enough to know that a portable game and a console one are two completely different sort of beasts. There's just no need for any sort of technological scare-mongering.

Is Android Microsoft's next cash cow? - The Seattle Times

Thumbnail image for Samsung Galaxy S.jpgThis story ran in the print edition of The Seattle Times on July 8, 2011. -Sharon Pian Chan

In the hunt for the next billion-dollar business, Microsoft may have discovered one in mobile software. It costs Microsoft nothing to produce and sell, and it's not Windows Phone.

It's Android, the wildly popular -- and free -- mobile-phone software made by competitor Google.

In the past nine months, Microsoft has gone after a handful of companies that make Android phones and tablets.

It has either sued or persuaded the companies to pay it license fees for some technologies found in certain Android features. Microsoft contends it has patents on those technologies.

Four companies in the past two weeks said they will pay licensing fees to Microsoft for selling tablets and phones that run on Android.

HTC, a major Taiwanese smartphone maker, entered into a licensing agreement in April to pay Microsoft a reported $5 per Android phone

Microsoft has begun talking to Samsung, the world's largest maker of Android phones, about a licensing agreement, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing South Korean media reports.

Microsoft, Google and Samsung declined to comment for this story.

But Brad Smith, Microsoft's chief attorney, addressed the issue in a wide-ranging discussion with reporters in June. Asked whether Android is a new business for Microsoft, Smith said, "We've been open that we're happy to enter into a licensing agreement" with companies that make Android devices.

Asked about a Citi analyst report that HTC was paying Microsoft $5 per Android phone, Smith said, "That seems like a fair price." He said $5 is less than how much Microsoft charges for each Windows Phone license.

"At Microsoft, we stand behind our products and customers," Smith said. "Google says it stands behind its products, but some days they stand so far behind, I'm not sure anyone can see them."

If Microsoft managed to get all Android phone and tablet makers to cough up $5 per device, Microsoft could make more than $913 million a year, using Google's figure of 500,000 new devices per day.

At Microsoft, any business that can bring in $1 billion annually is significant. In fiscal 2010, the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes the Xbox business and mobile software, made $8.1 billion in sales and $679 million in operating profit.

Google has said its mobile business, including search, advertising and services, is a $1 billion enterprise. The company gives away Android, but it sells deals to phone and tablet makers who want exclusive rights to offer the latest software for a limited period.

Android is the world's fastest-growing mobile operating system. Google said 100 million people are using Android devices and, by year's end, it's projected to have 40 percent of the worldwide smartphone market, according to Framingham, Mass. research firm IDC.

Nokia's Symbian software, which topped the market for a long spell, is expected to shrink to 21 percent; Apple will maintain a share of 16 percent and Research in Motion's BlackBerry will slip to 15 percent.

Microsoft's share, which includes both Windows Phone and its older Windows Mobile software, will grow slightly to 6 percent. Analysts think Microsoft has the potential for faster growth over the next few years because of a partnership with Nokia that makes Windows Phone the primary software for phones Nokia says it will start selling in the fourth quarter.

Tablet and phone makers flocked to Google because Android is a royalty-free alternative to Apple's iPhone and iPad software (Apple does not license its software to other companies, in any case). Android was more technologically advanced than Microsoft's previous phone software, Windows Mobile.

Microsoft has yet to develop an operating system designed specifically for tablets. It said it is building its next operating system, Windows 8, to run tablets and traditional PCs. That system is expected to be finished between October 2011 and 2012.

In October 2010, Microsoft launched the first volley at Android, suing Motorola Mobility in U.S. District Court of Western Washington and complaining to the International Trade Commission. Microsoft claims Motorola's Droid phones, which use the Android platform, infringe on nine of Microsoft's patents.

In November, Motorola countersued Microsoft in federal courts in California and Florida, saying Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Phone 7, Hotmail and Exchange Server software infringe on its patents.

Microsoft also sued Barnes & Noble in U.S. District Court in Western Washington over its Nook e-reader, claiming the book giant copied Microsoft's intellectual property as well. The Nook runs on Android.

Smaller companies Onkyo, Velocity Micro, General Dynamics Itronix and Wistron said in the past two weeks they will pay Microsoft license fees for devices they sell that run on Android.

Microsoft could potentially target many other companies with Android devices, including Dell, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Asus, Acer, LG and Toshiba.

One company is absent from Microsoft's cross hairs: Google.

Law professor Mark Lemley said large companies in the IT industry normally avoid suing each other directly.

"It's kind of like in the Cold War, this idea of mutually assured destruction," he said. "You have the power to take me out of the market and I have the power to take you out of the market, so why should either of us exercise that power?"

Lemley, the William H. Neukom professor at Stanford University, has represented Google's book-search business, but not its mobile-software business. He said it's not unusual for companies to sue each other's customers.

"What's interesting about smartphone litigation is that we're seeing that traditional détente in the IT industry breaks down," he said. "It's because companies are aggressively jockeying for market share, and nobody really knows how the market is going to shake out."

He said the lawsuits could stifle innovation; that happened during the early days of the aviation and radio industry.

Colleen Chien, a patent-law professor at Santa Clara University Law School in California, said Microsoft has become much more aggressive about intellectual property.

Microsoft and Google, along with other companies, recently bid against each other for a set of Nortel mobile-technology patents. Microsoft's consortium won.

"They're fighting over patents in the courtroom, and in the auction house, and for the customer in the marketplace," Chien said.

HP's TouchPad tablet: The reviews - Reuters Blogs (blog)

Hewlett-Packard’s decision to enlist funnyman Russell Brand to promote its new TouchPad tablet in a series of online videos seems to have been the right one. People love the ads. Whether consumers will warm to the device itself remains to be seen, though.

HP pitches the TouchPad as a workhorse that’s a boon to productivity and a marvel of multitasking, but which can also hold its own as an entertainment device. The Wi-Fi enabled tablet, which hit U.S. shelves on July 1 (at $500 for 16 GB model, $600 for 32 GB), is up against some serious competition from Apple’s standard-bearing iPad models and a stable of well-regarded Android alternatives.

HP is smart to trumpet the TouchPad’s ability to play Web video and multimedia formats such as Adobe Flash, which Apple has refused to support on its devices despite demands from its own customers. But reviews of the 9.7-inch tablet, which runs on Palm’s webOS mobile software, could so far be characterized as tepid at best. Overall, they seem to suggest that while HP should be praised for some of the TouchPad’s features, it falls short on too many other crucial elements. Here’s a sampling of what’s been said so far:

Walt Mossberg, Wall Street Journal: “Despite its attractive and different user interface, this first version is simply no match for the iPad. It suffers from poor battery life, a paucity of apps and other deficits.”

Computerworld: “The TouchPad is caught in a no-man’s land for tablets. On the plus side, it supports full multitasking, plays Flash and has the best onscreen keyboard around, making typical tablet tasks easier. However, it’s also chunky, overweight and lacks the apps that are needed to compete with the iPad.”

Engadget: “The shortage of apps is a problem, no doubt, but that will change with time. What won’t change is the hardware, and there we’re left a little disappointed. Holding this in one hand and either an iPad 2 or a Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the other leaves you wondering why you’d ever be compelled to buy the HP when you could have the thinner, lighter alternative for the same money. Meanwhile, the performance left us occasionally wanting and, well, what is there to say.”

David Pogue, New York Times: “The WebOS is beautiful . . . It’s graphically coherent, elegant, fluid and satisfying. That, apparently, is the payoff when a single company designs both the hardware and the software.”

“Much of the TouchPad’s promise remains theoretical; all kinds of stuff is “coming soon,” including music or movie stores and a Mac/Windows utility that will copy your computer’s music files to the tablet,” Pogue continued.

CNet: “The TouchPad would have made a great competitor for the original iPad, but its design, features, and speed put it behind today’s crop of tablet heavyweights . . . At the end of the day, the TouchPad feels like a well-orchestrated competitor to the original iPad and not the forward-thinking alternative we had hoped for.”

Boy Genius Report: “Today, the TouchPad is a solid tablet that definitely exhibits what I have come to call tabletitis. It is a jack of all trades, master of none, that shows tons of potential but isn’t quite there yet. The hardware is lacking and the software needs a shot of adrenaline.”

Smartphone apps: Is your privacy protected? - Computerworld

By Preston Gralla, Al Sacco and Ryan FaasComputerworld - Smartphone apps can do more than provide you with entertainment, information or useful services -- they can also invade your privacy.

Apps can trace your Web habits, look into your contact list, make phone calls without your knowledge, track your location, examine your files and more. They can also automatically send information such as location data to mobile ad networks.

In addition, apps can gather the phone number and the unique ID number of each type of phone: the Unique Device Identifier (UDID) on the iPhone, the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number on the BlackBerry, and (depending on the make) the IMEI or the Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) on an Android phone. Personal information that apps gather about you can be matched to these IDs. That means that ad networks can easily combine various pieces of information collected by multiple apps, build a sophisticated profile about you -- and then legally sell that data to other marketing companies.

It's not as if you weren't warned. Before you download an app, you often get to see the kinds of information that the app will collect about you. On Android, for example, when you tap Install to download and install an app, a screen displays the "permissions" you grant it when you install it. In order to download and install the app, you must tap OK underneath the "Accept permissions" button. BlackBerry phones also cite permissions and Apple monitors all App Store apps for safety.

But do you actually pay attention to what's gathered? Have you ever not downloaded an app based on what information it indicates it's going to harvest about you? What do those notices really mean?

In this article, we'll detail the kind of privacy threats you face when using mobile apps, offer advice on ways you can protect yourself, and take a look at possible legislation that may -- or may not -- help.

Researchers warn that a surprisingly high percentage of smartphone apps may threaten your privacy. In October 2010, joint research by Intel Labs, Penn State and Duke University found that 15 out of 30 Android apps analyzed sent geographic information to remote ad servers without users' knowledge. Seven of them also sent the unique phone identifier; in some cases, the actual phone number and serial number were sent to app vendors. This can enable app vendors and/or advertisers to create comprehensive profiles about your likes and dislikes, the places you visit when you carry your phone, your Web surfing habits and more. They can then use those profiles however they want or sell them to others.

Meanwhile, in June 2010, security vendor SMobile Systems found that 20% of Android apps allowed third parties (that is, companies other than the app vendors themselves) to get access to private or sensitive information. In addition, the report warned, 5% of the apps could make phone calls by themselves without user intervention and 2% could send an SMS text message to a premium, for-pay number -- again without the user making the call.

Apple's iOS is not immune to such threats. In January, a class-action suit filed in San Jose charged Apple, the music-streaming service Pandora and others with "transmitting [users'] personal, identifying information to advertising networks without obtaining their consent." The suit also charged that "some apps are also selling additional information to ad networks, including users' location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views." The case is still winding its way through the courts.

This issue is enough of a worry that federal prosecutors are currently investigating whether iOS and Android apps obtain or transmit information about users without properly disclosing what they are doing, according to the Wall Street Journal. Pandora has already received a subpoena in the probe, according to the Journal.

The most comprehensive investigation into the kind of information that smartphone apps gather and how they use it may be one conducted by the Wall Street Journal itself. The Journal examined 101 popular iOS and Android apps and found that "56 transmitted the phone's unique device ID to other companies without users' awareness or consent. Forty-seven apps transmitted the phone's location in some way. Five sent age, gender and other personal details to outsiders."

For example, the Journal found that that Pandora "sent age, gender, location and phone identifiers to various ad networks." The iOS and Android versions of a game called Paper Toss "sent the phone's ID number to at least five ad companies." The list goes on.

The Journal also found that, as a general rule, iOS apps sent more personal data than did Android apps, but the newspaper also noted that "because of the test's size, it's not known if the pattern holds among the hundreds of thousands of apps available."

Options for Protecting against Web ThreatsThis independent paper from senior analyst Jon Collins at FreeForm Dynamics considers how Web-based security threats are evolving, within the context of IT trends including mobile, home computing and other forms of remote access that could potentially increase the attack surface of the companies. It defines the scale and types of threat, what to look for in a corporate web security solution and compares the different types of technological approach available to companies and the processes that need to be considered for effective protection.

Find a park

Travellers can find the best caravan parks in Australia, thanks to the new iPhone app, Find A Park.

Following a 31.7 per cent increase in the number of caravans manufactured over the past year, the app is designed for travellers using road vehicles for their getaway and eliminates the need for maps and brochures that take up valuable caravan space.

The Find A Park App enables travellers to find caravan parks by state, town or park name and uses the built in GPS to locate the closest park.

The App also allows travellers to phone ahead to the park for a reservation, with the click of a button and shows step by step instructions on how to get there.

Principal strategist of Find A Park's app developer, Brighthouse David Holland said the market demands facilitated the development of the app.

"The Australian RV market is now dominated by those 30-49 year olds who are technologically savvy. The group wants up to the minute information in the palm of their hand which Find A Park can give them," he said.

Pixofactor Entertainment gets Michigan tax break for Ben Hogan golf app - The Detroit News

Last Updated: July 09. 2011 1:00AM

A Royal Oak company received a $78,440 digital media tax incentive for a golf instructional and interactive application for mobile phones, the state said Friday.

Pixofactor Entertainment's "Ben Hogan Lessons Mobile Application" got the state money based on a proposed $196,100 of spending in the state, according to the Michigan Film Office. The app is adapted from golfer Hogan's book "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf."

The app will be developed for smartphones such as the iPhone and Android, and will demonstrate golf fundamentals with interactive animation.

"We could see something in the store by 60 to 90 days," Pixofactor CEO Sean Hurwitz said, adding that the app will have a gradual launch and be updated.

"Michigan is home to some of the best golf courses in the nation as well as a growing digital media sector, making the state an ideal fit for this project," Film Office Director Carrie Jones said in a statement.

The team developing the project will consist of eight to 10 workers, the company said.

The digital media incentive is the 13th project approved for incentives. About $19.6 million in cash rebates have been awarded so far, leaving $5.4 million under the state's $25 million cap.

Pixofactor moved to Michigan from Florida in 2009 to take advantage of the film and digital media tax incentives.

Pixofactor is building its business in part around projects based on Ben Hogan, considered one of the best golfers of the 20th century. The state previously approved incentives for the "Ben Hogan Five Lessons" Wii game and the website Ben Hogan Five Lessons Interactive Experience.

The website and Wii game were the first interactive website and video game to be approved for state tax incentives. The "Ben Hogan Mobile Application" is the first phone application incentive.

Mobile Gaming Stocks: Will Cheap Games Hurt the Video Game Industry? - Business Insider

Kapitall is an online investing platform that combines the world's friendliest investing experience with powerful yet simple tools to build your skills - and maybe even your net worth.

RSS Feed

If you're a child of the 1980s, then there's a good chance that Nintendo's inaugural video game console topped your Christmas or Hannukah wishlist when the first-generation system debuted. Back then, saving the pixelated princess was the easy part--the real challenge was just getting the game to load, involving shaking, blowing on and sometimes even smacking the temperamental cartridge around.

Hard to believe that today, game play is as easy as simply turning on your phone.

Mobile gaming is on the rise, and revolutionizing the gaming industry--according to a recent study by Nielsen, the average iPhone user spends about 15 hours a month playing games on their smartphones.

Android users clocked in slightly above the overall average smartphone user, at 9.3 hours compared with 7.8 hours over a 30-day period. 64% of downloaders have loaded a new game onto their phone within the last 30 days, making games the most popular, and lucrative, category of smartphone applications.

Need more proof? Social and mobile gaming giant Zynga just filed a $1 billion IPO.

So what does all this mean for console gaming systems? If you ask Peter Vesterbacka, creator of the popular Angry Birds game for mobile phones, their days are numbered.

Quoted at SXSW declaring "consoles are dying," Vesterbacka sees the future of gaming in mobile and social mediums, while traditional companies charging $40 or $50 for a game are heading toward extinction.

But Nintendo president Satoru Iwata makes a compelling counterargument: “Consider this: the number of games available on the big app sites is in the tens of thousands. Game development is drowning. Yes, these games are far less expensive to create, but what revenue will they generate?”

Does the rise of the cheap mobile game signal weaker sales for video game companies that produce more expensive "premium" games for consoles? You be the judge--here's a list of companies with exposure to the trend.

"Music Unlimited (powered by Qriocity)" lets you instantly stream songs, sync your current music library, and create personalized playlists from a catalog of "over seven million songs" from the Big Four music labels: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music, as well as independent labels and publishers. Sony will also make song and artist recommendations based on your listening habits.

Subscriptions start at $3.99 per month for a basic plan and $9.99 per month for a premium, unlimited-streaming plan. Commitment-phobic? Sony is offering a 30-day free trial to new users. It is also letting U.S. PlayStation users try the application for free for the next 180 days.

Google Acquires SageTV, Set To Bolster Google TV, Android With DVR? - ReelSEO Online Video News

google-sagetv

Let’s face it, while those of you with Google TV love it, it’s not the most popular platform and certainly isn’t living up to Google’s own expectations. So it should be no surprise when they make this kind of move. Google has acquired a new company, and the company in question is SageTV. Their product is home theater software (previously available for $40 or so). The downside of the acquisition is that consumers can no longer get the SageTV software (I’ll give you some other options at the bottom on this article).

While the company stated that they accepted the Google offer because they share a vision of open technology, they almost ironically, pulled down their store and just about everything else once they signed the deal. I guess it’s not open anymore.

Here’s some info on the no-longer-available SageTV software I dug up today:

Watch online video on your TV with integrated Google Video support. SageTV Media Extender lets you connect all your TVs to Google Video.

SageTV Media Extender DVD playback lets you play all your hard disk based DVDs with DVD menus and 5.1 audio. Now see thumbnails for all your TV show recordings. Powerful file conversion and compression – SageTV can convert any of your files to almost any format you need:

Pushbutton conversion to video iPod, portable video player or cell phone formatsSave space by converting your TV recordings to higher compression video formatsConvert your HDTV recordings to MPEG4 with surround sound to save space

SageTV supports more formats than ever before including:

WMA, AAC (iTunes), FLAC, Ogg/Vorbis music files now supported for playback with full tag parsingMOV (Quicktime), 3GP, MP4, H.264 Playback

New DVB support with EPG data direct from broadcaster. Now see EPG data from ATSC broadcasts for DTV subchannels.

Enhanced EPG Data for US/Canadian customers includes Series Information and TV Editorials.

New Music, Photo and Video library support:

Rotate and flip photos with full qualityView music by GenreFind your favorite musc of the 80s, 70s and moreVideo and DVD library with more detailed media informationAspect ratio correction available for all media types

I also found out they had a hardware media extender called the SageTV HD Theater 300

sagetv HD300

Enjoy online video, music, photos and your DVD/BluRay library all over your home in Full HD for only $149.95 each. You can also watch live or recorded HDTV from your PC or Mac with SageTV Media Center software. Our fastest HD Theater ever!

Now with HDMI 1.3 and support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA. All your favorite online video from YouTube, Google Video and major TV networks on your TV at the press of a button on your remote control!

Easy to setup, just connect your SageTV HD Theater to your TV, setup your wired or optional wireless network connection and you are ready to go. (Wireless adapter sold separately)

Enjoy your home video library, music and photosMovie Trailers, music videos, TV shows and more on demand onlineEasy to setup, connect your TV, home network and goNo fan, no noiseWith optional SageTV Media Center software for PC or Mac and an HD TV tuner you can watch and pause live HDTV and record a whole season of shows

SageTV’s main bailiwick (so I hear) is in fact DVR, so that sure sounds like what Google would like to add into the next version of Android and Google TV doesn’t it? Then those set-top boxes you’ve got might be able to get a firmware update which allows recording of shows to an external USB device. That could mean instant bonus for pre-existing Google TV users.

It could also mean an all-in-one solution for Google Android users who have got tablets and smartphones. If SageTV is rolled into the next version of Android, then a server/client setup is no stretch of the imagination at all. That would mean instant streaming server for all your home-based entertainment straight to your portable Android devices.

If you’re in the market for a SageTV-like product, there are a ton of options already available (here’s that part where I tell you where else to go). My father, TechnoDad, really digs My Movies while I’m currently testing out Remote Potato. I’ve also got Orb installed which works quite well when compared to Remote Potato which has some issues. For a while there we were both testing TVersity but in the end it just wasn’t what we were looking for.

This is not meant to be any kind of exhaustive list, just some places to start looking round. Feel free to drop your favorite in comments.

I have to be honest with you, I’ve never heard of SageTV until today. Though, I imagine there are plenty of pissed off people right about now. I mean from a developer community standpoint, you help SageTV build up an app full of customizations and extras along with a community that uses the tool, and then they shut it all down and sell it off to Google. That could certainly be frustrating, especially if development on the application goes totally in-house at Google and is no longer available to the public. All that time and effort, and any code you might have submitted in good faith, suddenly falls into corporate hands and disappears? Yeah, I’d be sort of pissed off as well.

Then again, Google might not do that at all. The closing of SageTV’s site (aside from forums) could simply be to enable a swift and clean changeover of control. After all, SageTV shouldn’t need to focus on their own web development anymore since they’ve got the resources of Google at their disposal.

For Google it’s definitely win-win. They probably got a good deal and got a key piece of software that they need if they want to continue expanding the multimedia streaming capabilities of Google TV and Android.

Here’s a video from YouTube showing the features of the latest version 7 of SageTV. Too bad we can’t see it in the ‘flesh’ anymore.

If development does turn into Google Android only, I hope that Google releases SageTV version 7 to the public. That’s the minimum good faith gesture they could do on their part and then any further development of the software could be ‘theirs.’
